Has anyone taught themselves to speak another language?
I want to learn italian. I can't get to lessons, but what is the best way to teach yourself. I may go to Italy in the future, but i want to learn the language myself first. Has anyone actually taught themselves a language? Is it possible to get really good by yourself? Thanks.
Yes I have experience teaching myself a language yet I am only 13. You have to be paient and have the time and really commit! What I did is get cd's that teach you the language, also get a dictionary, grammer book, and basic phrase book. Also look on line, word2word.com is really good! Create a plan for yourself, take about an hour each day to review and learn new stuff.
Also listen to italian music and put movies in italian it really helps!

You can get those books with cd's. They are very helpful with the pronounciation.

Try to find out some web site of the language, look for courses,
and next start with short articles of Italian news papers

ANy book is good for self teaching. And Italian is a very easy language to learn.
I've learnt Spanish by myself. Of course, if you know some native speakers, it helps practice.

well im spanish and ive speaked spanish since i could talk and when I was little watching blues clues and those kids shows i learned english i guess you can Say im really smart and i am.lol

I used a book called Italian in ten minutes a day. You can buy it at Barnes and Noble, or better yet, you could visit a library and find any book that has interactive exercises that teach basic grammer. This book helps tourists and visitors in particular, but learning the grammer will be much more effective for anyone who wishes to engage in deep conversation or study/live there.
Once you have the basic grammer down you pretty much have to memorize irregualr verb conjugations, vocabulary words, and anything else that's unusual. It's a very easy language to learn and if you happen to know Spanish it's practically a difference of transliating, sometimes not even changing more than a few letters for a whole sentence.
There are plenty of translating and conjugating books and websites to help you along the way. (altavista.com, verbix.com, google).

I had the same problem my sophomore year of high school. My grandparents were visiting us, and only one of them has been in the country before so niether knew any English. My dad never bothered to teach me.

It is great that you are learning it.
My suggestion would be… try to write everyday. Get a native (if not possible, an advanced student) to point at mistakes. It'll be a lot of work in the begining, but you'll see that it'll help you.
To find a native to help you, go to any site that offers language exchange. It won't be hard to find them. And in the process you can learn more about their culture.
