Why are there black people in my Italian language class?
I'm taking an italian language course at college and when i went to the class i expected everyone there to be white but i was surprised to see some black people in the class. Why would a black person need to learn italian? This is college so its not like they have to take a language course like in highschool. I could see why they would need to learn French because alot of black people speak that, or Spanish because alot of people speak that too, but Italian?
If you are seriously asking this question - Just drop out Jerry because you’re going to flunk & waste your money

When I took an Italian course once there was black ppl in in….and the dude next to me was a Filipino that was almost fluent (I dunno why he was in a beginners course tho)

I'm gonna give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're not some troll. Black people, just like any other people can be interested in other cultures and want to know the language etc. I happen to love japanese.

They have just as much right to the take the class as you do. I am sure there are black people in Italy and Italians derived from Africa. Besides they are just interested in Italian…there doesn't have to be a need.

what, so black people shouldn't speak italian? wtf? i don't understand your 'logic', but perhaps a good reason is just that the black people in your class are genuinely interested in the language. i sure as hell wouldn't be continuing spanish if i weren't interested. do you think black people learning mandarin, japanese, or korean is weird too? because i know black students at my college who are taking those classes.

Well, ask any black person and they will tell you that Italians are "the black white people." Italians and African Americans have a lot in common. Besides, French and Spanish are the most common languages to learn. It is college and college is all about higher learning, right? I took Japanese in college.

Because they want to broaden their horizons. It's not against the law to learn a language that isn't a part of your culture. Unlike you, they don't want to be ignorant.

There are a bajillion reasons anybody of any race would wanna learn Italian. Because they like Italian culture, because they wanna go to Italy, because they like somebody who's Italian, so that they can order Italian food in Italian… the list goes on.

Um.. because it's not illegal.
As a matter of fact. If I had the option to learn italian earlier, I also would, because I have Italian grandparents and family in Sicily I'd like to meet and hold a conversation with.
However by the time I'm in college I would already have 6 years of Spanish, so I would take a Spanish class. But honestly, it's none of your business why other people would want to learn Italian… Why are u taking it? And you don't like the diversity, drop the class.

I don't understand why you are so concerned about it, but maybe they want to learn the language because they want to travel to Italy or communicate with the people who speak those languages.Also, being bilingual is a positive thing and gives you more opportunities in the world such as job opportunities because some jobs do look for that. We as people are allowed to learn any language we want and should take any opportunity too.

Maybe because they can. Some black people ARE interested in the world around them.

You are not Italian either but you are there, this question is so weird, why can't a black person learn whatever language they want, just like you. You don't have to be a certain race to learn italian, you sound more like a middle school kid than a college student.

Why do you take an italian language course? Why do the other white people you know study italian? So, black people do it for the same reasons. Do you need to be white or black or asian in order to study or not to study something? The answer is NOT, thanks God!

*Surprise* Black people can be educated and speak different languages as well. It looks better on your resume when your bilingual and maybe they want to be well versed. Why does it befuddle you that black people want to learn italian?
