There are a ton of Italian textbooks out there … if you’re a tourist, go with Berlitz. If you have money and time to burn, choose Rosetta Stone. If you want a cheap book with a CD Rom, cool pictures, and simple explanations of the language, pick up “Italian in Ten Minutes a Day.” It makes Italian fun, simple, and it accessable … and it gives a beginner the total basics needed in order to continue on to intermediate and advanced levels.
