What are some good sources of beginner-level German texts?

german for beginners
Daniel S asked:

I’ve currently had a year of college German, and I’d like to find some texts that I can read, understand, practice, and learn from. I browse Der Spiegel, but there’s just too much vocabulary that I don’t know. I’ve also browsed around german.about.com, but haven’t found all that much.

It seems like I could certainly find something on gutenberg.spiegel.de but I don’t know enough about German authors to know where to look.

Suggestions? (For sites, authors, or books)

Is it okay to study German and Spanish at the same time?

german for beginners
Mairyalete asked:

I was wondering if it was alright to study those two languages at the same time.

I am taking Level 3 Spanish 2 for a full year in High School, but I am also planning on studying German on my own free time online and with books from Beginners on.

I was wondering if it would affect my Spanish speaking and learning at all. I don’t want to risk my grades in this class- and I really want to learn Spanish too but I am planning to Speak German as well and as soon as I can.

Is this a good idea?
Will it get me confused with the two languages?

Please help!

I’m planning on studying before school starts [September 4th] for a jump-start.

Thanks,

Mairy

For people who are learning German/have learned German?

german for beginners
Evan asked:

What books, and programs do you recommend I use to Learn German by myself? I already have Living Language Complete Course: The Basics, and Living Language Ultimate German Beginner-Intermediate. I like these programs, but I think I need other books and stuff too. I was thinking about getting Rosetta Stone, but it’s so expensive, and I’ve heard it really isn’t as good as they say it is. I also tried Berlitz German books and I like those, and think I’ll buy them. Any other recommendations?

Where can I find a site that teaches German language from A to Z, and for free, of course?

german for beginners
M_A_saBet asked:

I mean a comprehensive or integrated site that teaches you all about the German language: vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. I need a site that starts from the beginner’s level to the intermediate level or the upper-low level. And I need it to be a free site, too.

Any tips for a beginner who wants to learn German?

german for beginners
Athene-Marie asked:

I know some of the most common words, but I don’t understand the way they form their sentences, those little symbols, (Are they called accent marks or stress marks?) and how they pronounce German. Also, what does this symbol “ß” mean? As you can see, I’m having a lot of trouble.
