Actually, I learned German through school and living in Germany and my first language is English. I had a bit of a struggle getting all the grammar down, but once I got over that hump it was so much easier after that. English is a Germanic language, so it has a lot of similarities. Also, German is much more strict in following grammatical rules than English which has so many strange exceptions, so German in much easier in that respect. Once you learn a rule, you can pretty much count on everything following that rule. So, I think you can get a good start teaching German to yourself. Make sure you get lots of practice listening, as well. And nothing can replace the actual practice of speaking with people.
