This sentence cannot be translated literally because the phrase “to sing about” doesn’t exist as such in French. What I would say would be more something like this:
“Ils chantaient une chanson qui parlait de l’amour qu’ils avaient l’un pour l’autre.” (which means literally “They sang a song that talked about the love they had for one another”) I cannot think of any other decent way to express this idea without making it sound like an anglicism.
