Are you looking for a novel or a textbook? If a novel, then try Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupery (sp?). It is a children’s book, but enjoyable for adults too.

My teacher had us read “Fama va en Californie” and “Pauvre Anne,” but I think those are part of a package. Try buying DVDs and switching the laguage to French in a movie. (Put “English for the deaf” subtitles if you need them.)

Hello I am french and I think the first suggestion is good: “le petit prince is a really book book. It’s easily understandable for the learners and really clever.
    Not only for children.
I recently read it for the second time and I am 28!

Other good books and modern ones are the ones written by Daniel Pennac. Like “la fée carabine” etc…

I would recommend short stories. It is easier to get into it. Those from famous french authors like Guy de Maupassant, Théophile Gauthier are easy to find.
You can also get books in a special format where the text is on one page and the “difficult words” are explained (in french) on the opposite page.
I advise that you look for all these books in libraries.
As for “Le petit Prince”, it is a great book, very poetic and full of philosophy, but it may be difficult to appreciate it.
About movies : you can rent many french movies at you local DVD rental. I recommend “Amelie” released in 2001 (not sure of the full title in english but if you ask, they will find it). Most of the time, the french movies that you can find are those which got prices and some may be a little bit difficult. The subtitles are a help but most of the time the translation is not accurate…
