I’d recommend going to (before you know it). They have beginners’ French flash cards you can download for free.

Otherwise:
Vocabulary: greetings & terms of politeness, family, numbers, colors, school vocabulary, dates, etc.
Verbs: regular -er verbs, avoir, etre, aller, faire

Pronunciation is very important, or you won’t be able to learn and remember words properly. Luckily, once you get the gist of it, you will always be able to tell French pronunciation from written text, unlike English where you have words like tear, record, etc.

You should buy a french cd that is conversational and speak to people in french. I have to do the same thing for Spanish and it is a good start to try to speak the language.

Try the books of Comtesse de Segur like ‘Les malheurs de Sophie’, ‘Les petites filles modeles’ and ‘Les memoirs d’un ane’. You could also try Charles Perrault with his collection of stories like Le chat Botte, Prince Riquet a la Houppe, La belle au Bois Dormant, Barbe Bleu. Surely you have heard about the famous Martine .It’s the story of a little girl in different situations like Martine a la fete des fleurs, Martine et la fete des meres, Martine part a la foire. There are also collections of french stories for children in the edition Hachette, Librairie Rose and Librairie Vert which include books like the series of Etalon Noir and Alice(which is the translation of Nancy Drew).

I have heard about and seen read along books which come with the story book and an accompanying cassette or CD but the ones I have seen are in English. I have not yet seen french ones but I suppose they must be on the market. You could contact the bookstores in your locality. They will be in a better position to inform you about its existence or not.

Also there is a series of books that are for those wishing to learn a new language, I do not know which edition exactly but I do know that the title is something like ‘Learn French in 30n days’.

If you do not find any read along books, go to. There are many free e-books that you can download or read online. Some of these books also have their audio version which can also be downloaded chapter by chapter. You could find out which books have an audio version, buy the book or download and get going but I think that the books you will find there are of a higher level than what you are looking for but there is no harm in checking it out.

YFU has summer and semester long exchange programs. Also, speak french even when you are alone or with others. Speaking builds memory. Conversations assists in maintanance.
