What is the best way to teach yourself French?

Does anybody know of a good book/ audio that gives you more than “helpful phrases”? oh yeah, going to class is not an option…

Yes, Rosetta Stone is the best thing out there. It’s not perfect, I’ll be the first one to admit, but it’s the fastest, easiest, most fun way to learn if you’re a beginner. That’s the hardest thing, it only goes up to about intermediate level.

I did the French Rosetta Stone for about a month and took the placement test at school, I scored into the second year of French. That’s what I’m taking now, and I’m one of the best ones in the class! Everyone else who’s doing well in the class took a year of French before in college AND they took a few years in high school, but we’re at the same level. After you do Rosetta, the next step is to find some way to actually use your French. Rent French movies or watch your regular DVDs with French dubbing and/or subtitles (Keep inn mind though, these are usually in Quebec, which is different from regular French, so you might not understand a lot). This will help you learn new words and get the idea more.

For speaking practice, you’d just have to find French-speaking people.

A really good book for explaining French Grammar is “French Demystified.” Don’t get anything from Barron or Instant Immersion, or “French for Dummies;” I got them all and was very disappointed. Berlitz dictionaries are good, but that’s the only good thing they make.

A lot of people learn to teach themselves different things…?

how do you teach yourself French? i know someone that speaks Fluent French, but i don't think that they could teach me. i want to Learn French pretty well by the time i'm 17, and I want to start now, if i take french at school, i'll have to wait until January, should i wait? if not, how do i teach myself?

You don't have to wait until January to start learning. Although it is a good idea to take French at school because you learn faster when you learn with others, you can start to teach yourself some basic French right now by borrowing audio cds from the local library. Pimsleur is quite good although there are other choices. There are dvds too if you are a visual learner. Or if you prefer software, Rosetta Stone is an easy to use software to learn French. The best way to get good at a language is to speak it constantly with someone who is fluent. So, do practise Speaking French with that someone you know as often as you can.

How do you teach yourself a language?

has anyone been able to teach themselves a language fluently? if so, how? I really want to Learn French.

I’ve heard Rosetta Stone is a great (but costly) program. If you want to teach yourself a language look into buying VERB books and dictionaries for the french language. That’s a start. Also, after a period of time, see if you can find websites and TV shows that incorporate the French language! Good luck to you!

I am looking to learn French. Which has a better language program: Pimsler's or Teach Yourself?

My college uses a software called TeLL me More, by Auralog. It covers not only the basics, but also intermediate or advanced level. My goal was to become fluent so it was perfect for me. It has a lot of different activities: picture/word association, videos, dialogues,…, includes also grammar and conjugation. It has also more content than any other language software. Their speech recognition is great so you can have a dialogue with the computer. You can check out their website at http://www.auralog.com for a free demo and compare too. You can check out independent reviews at http://www.toptenreviews.com or the about.com websites

The best way to learn a language would be through immersion, visiting these countries. Learning a language will require some time. In addition to software, you can have books which are useful as well. Audio CDs like Pimsleur for instance might help you out but you cannot get any feedback on your pronunciation so I did not like it so much.

What is the best way to teach yourself a new language?

I've been trying to teach myself a new language - namely German because I thin kit is a cool language and all my school offers are French and Spanish. I don't necessarily need to be fluent, but that would be nice. So far I have been using free translators and teaching myself simple words - yes, no, good, bad, me, i, you. But then I don't know the next stpe after that, like how to know what words mean in a sentance or even how to form sentances.

I do not want to spend a lot of money. I just need an easy way to learn but not necessarily quick because I have all the time in the world.

The best thing you can do is to start reading and writing as soon as you can. Even if you have to sit there with a dictionary to figure it out. Vocabulary will build quickly. You may want to join a group, like e Tandem. e Tandem will partner you with someone who speaks the language you are wanting to learn, and you will write letters back and forth to each other. 1/2 the letter in your native tongue, and 1/2 in what you wish to learn. You then help each ther in your learning.

A great Free software for German is Before You Know It. You can download at their site. German About is another great website. Check the following links.

Best of luck to you

What is the best way to teach yourself a foreign language?

I want to teach myself French, but I'm wondering what's the best way to do it. I've heard suggestions such as watch French TV, or use a Learn French textbook, or use a learn French CD. What is the best way? And do you have any specific books/CDs/anything else to recommend?

Well for me, when I decided to learn Portuguese by myself I sort of incorporated all of the things that you mentioned above. On certain days I'd focus more on my listening skills so I'd watch programs on the net in Portuguese as well as listen to Brazilian music. Other times I'd focus more on grammar/reading/writing so to do this I'd practice with the Portuguese book I bought as well as make a list of about 50-70 words from my Portuguese dictionary that I would memorize each week.
So to answer you question I don't think that there is just 1 best way to learn the language. You have to incorporate several different methods to fully learn the langauge. Some other ideas that you may want to consider are forming a French speaking pen pal over the net, listening to French music, watching French films with subs, podcasts that teach the langauge, and just surfing the net in French. Try visiting Yahoo answers Quebec or France by scrolling down to the bottom of the page and clicking on their flags. You may even want to try switching your homepage over to Yahoo Quebec or Yahoo France so you can practice reading in the language some more. Be advised though, it's helpful to keep a dictionary nearby while doing this because there's likely to be a lot of words you won't know for the first couple of weeks/months.
Best of luck, and if you need any more information in regards to how to find a good pen pal site or where to find Good French podcasts just let me know.
Bye!
